I don't have Windows 7 myself anymore, so I can't try it, and that's why I've put Windows 10 as minimum requirement on Steam.

I recommend just buying Robo Maestro when it launches, and if it turns out it doesn't work on your computer after all, just refund it on Steam. But indeed, no one works in a void and I don't think any innovative artists (or scientists or engineers) did their work without being inspired by something or learning from something.

Thanks for sharing! That woodwork you linked is amazing. :)Joost van Dongenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00569566310604620045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3064325214589649535.post-67009510645406047852021-09-10T12:30:36.777+02:002021-09-10T12:30:36.777+02:00In a way I find it funny that your way of creating...In a way I find it funny that your way of creating original works is to simply look at less mainstream (in games) sources to derive from. I'm not trying to say there is something wrong about requiring inspiration and creating derivative works of course. Who can work from a void?

That begs the question: what did Kandinsky derive their very abstract work from? ... it's a rhetorical question. You can probably find some art critique out there that analyses this thoroughly.

To get back to your question, what inspires me? I like game theory and economic concepts such as the prisoners dilemma which can be applied to (large sclae) cooperative games, something I don't think has been explored a lot yet.

On a more visual level I think ancient architecture studies and large structures such as cathedrals can make great inspiration! Depending on how much effort was put into the detailing of course. As you already pointed out, museums can be a great source of inspiration as well.

While in Innsbruck, Austria I visited the Tiroler Landsmuseum. They collection contained a lot of woodwork with interesting shapes and patterns: https://www.tiroler-landesmuseen.at/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/06_VKM_c_TLM-scaled-1210x680.jpg

By the way, the shorter format is fine! It gives me some time to think about the subject instead of just passively reading :)1000 Gibibithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16508004663029107242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3064325214589649535.post-17952639880017530742021-08-22T00:23:22.464+02:002021-08-22T00:23:22.464+02:00Even if you are Blizzard, your game can die. Takes a lot of work to make though, so you need to have a big enough team before it's an option.

By the way, you don't need your own engine for any of that. You can make custom tools for Unity and Unreal as well (although I don't have any experience with that myself) and some of our tools aren't even in an engine: just Photoshop and After Effects scripts.

All our games so far are made in the Ronitech, which is our own C++ engine. It supports a lot of different rendering APIs depending on the platform. The Blightbound version of Ronitech supports DirectX11 (PC+XboxOne), DirectX9, OpenGL and the PS4 rendering API.

I wrote the first version of our engine for Swords & Soldiers, when we too were 7 people and I was the only programmer. I'm officially TH3 H4RDC0R3Z since then. :PJoost van Dongenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00569566310604620045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3064325214589649535.post-87589443693623432122021-04-16T03:13:35.151+02:002021-04-16T03:13:35.151+02:00Wow, quite awesome tool.

I mean, it had a Spine copy tool inside the Engine already but the Sprite Swap thing needed to be dealt manually via scripting some months ago.
And with a custom tool, things looks way more fast and more focused on the problem you're solving. Different from game engine specific tools which takes longer to be updated and tries to solve a lot of related problems resulting in a chimera tool that doesn't have a quick iteration workflow.

Bah, better stop complaining about it. To give context, I am just starting on this custom tool world, after discovering that the guys behind Supergiant Games had their own custom engine and they are like 7 guys. Hauha
BTW, the Blightbound engine is based on something like MonoGame? Or it is more native like a C++ with OpenGL/ DirectX?

Thanks for sharing this content!Alan Pereira Arthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06807855968242689223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3064325214589649535.post-21778819482000059492021-04-16T02:48:18.122+02:002021-04-16T02:48:18.122+02:00Hi Joost, just discovered your blog after one of m...Hi Joost, just discovered your blog after one of my teammates showed me some articles about texture compression (those back from 2015).

The content here is awesome and I am just passing by to wish you the best on this new journey.
